Welcome Note by the Qatar University President

The President of Qatar University

Dr. Hassan Al Derham
President of Qatar University

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 11th edition of the “International Conference on Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development” (ICEIRD) that will take place in Doha, on October 29-31, 2018.

The conference is a significant platform for academics, university technology managers, entrepreneurs, policy makers, and businesses from around the world to share their expertise and knowledge about university-industry links, innovation, entrepreneurship and regional development. Themed “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Economic Growth for Sustainable Development”, this year’s edition will address the current challenges of nowadays society.

As Qatar’s first national institution of higher education, Qatar University (QU) acknowledges its responsibility to take the lead in advancing a rich, sustainable research culture throughout its teaching/learning environment and within the wider educational and research spectrum in Qatar and the region. The University is committed to advance the spirit of innovation, curiosity, discovery and entrepreneurship in the country’s youth, and to shape the future generation of entrepreneurs that will contribute to the country’s development and growth. In doing so, we developed a strategic plan (2018-2022), which maps out the routes to achieve continuing performance excellence and build on the University’s achievements in its key areas of education, research, institution and engagement.

Entrepreneurship and innovation are among the gross-goals of QU’s strategy. Our mission is to equip the current and future citizens of Qatar with the skills, expertise and competencies they need to be able to contribute to, and lead, Qatar’s development for the benefit of future generations. Qatar is a developing country and there are tremendous opportunities to develop SMEs. SMEs development is one of the fundamental pillars to achieve economic diversity and a sustainable knowledge-based economy. We urge our students, as they graduate, to think about setting up their own businesses rather than just taking a job somewhere. The process has been implemented through the establishment of a dedicated Center for Entrepreneurship in September 2013. The center has the mission to provide the community with various services and training programs with the aim to increase community awareness on the importance of entrepreneurship, develop students’ skills and support them to innovate business ideas and transform them into viable start-ups.

QU students are also engaged in numerous entrepreneurial activities such as the Annual Innovation & Entrepreneurship Contest, the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) which takes place on November every year, and the Annual Forum of Entrepreneurship in Economic Development. These activities invite them to unlock their talents and sense of entrepreneurship in the spirit of competition, teamwork, and shared knowledge. They also expose them to the challenges they must address on their way to becoming successful business owners, entrepreneurs, and inspirational role models in the wider community.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2019 “International Conference on Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development”. In addition to an inspiring program with many leaders in their field, you will enjoy the warm hospitality that Qatar always provides.
